    Πως απαιτούμε από τις νέες γενιές να μην επαναλάβουν τα τρομερά λάθη των γηραιότερων εάν δεν γνωρίζουν το παρελθόν; Πως απαιτούμε από τη νέα γενιά να απορρίψει τη μισαλλοδοξία και να προωθήσει την ανεκτικότητα προς τους άλλους ανεξαρτήτως φυλής, καταγωγής και θρησκευτικών πεποιθήσεων – Εβραίων, Χριστιανών και Μουσουλμάνων- όταν υιοθετούμε αποφάσεις με αντισημιτικό ύφος;

ADDRESS OF THE AMBASSADOR OF ISRAEL, MS. IRIT BEN-ABBA, AT THE UNVEILING CEREMONY FOR THE HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL OF THE JEWS OF KAVALA (Sunday, 7 June 2015)
Mr. Deputy Minister, Mr. Secretary General of Education and Religion, Mr. Vice Governor, Mrs. Mayor, members of the Municipal Council, President of the Central Board of Greek Jewish Communities (KISE), President of the Thessaloniki Jewish Community, Mr. Ezra Bakolas, Mr. Victor Venouziou, representatives of Greek Jewish Communities, distinguished guests.
It is 70 years since the Red Army threw open the gates of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp. Unfortunately, it did not happen earlier even though today historians believe that the allied countries had information about the systematic murder being perpetrated by the Nazi killing machine long before January 1945. Had they taken over the camps earlier, hundreds of thousands of Jews and others could have survived the horror.
“We survivors don’t want our past to be our children’s future” said one of the very few survivors in the recent ceremony in Auschwitz commemorating 70 years since the end of the War.  This prophecy may become a reality unless our generation is vigilant in remembering the horrors of the past.
It is unfortunate that this city, Kavala, chose the wrong path in promoting this remembrance just two weeks ago. It was very unfortunate that 70 years after the darkest period in world history – in which people were exterminated because of the mere fact that they were Jews - a decision was taken here in Kavala to reject this chapter in the history of the city’s Greek Jewish Community.
How can we expect the younger coming generations not to repeat the horrible mistakes of older ones unless they are aware of the past? How can we expect the new generation to reject intolerance and promote acceptance of others regardless of race, creed, or religion - of Jews, Christians and Muslims alike- if we adopt decisions that have anti -Semitic overtones?
I applaud the immediate official reaction of the Greek Government expressed by Secretary General Giorgos Kalaitzis, denouncing the decision of the Municipality of Kavala, as well as the statements of many Greek political parties, the Greek Jewish Community and international Jewish organizations, which put pressure on the Mayor and the Municipal Council to allow the ceremony to take place today.  It was the right thing to do although the whole the experience left us with some bitterness and sorrow.
    Ladies and Gentlemen,
Prior to the Holocaust, the Jews of Kavala numbered around 1500 people. Jews in the region came to Greece from the Land of Israel thousands of years ago while some escaped the Spanish Inquisition in the 15th century. They lived a comfortable and harmonious life with the Orthodox Christians and the Muslims of this region for generations. In 1943, when the Nazis took the decision to exterminate Greek Jewry, there were few Greeks including Metropolitans in various cities, who risked their lives to save their fellow Jewish compatriots - their neighbors and friends.
There has been no atrocity in the history of humanity that can compare in its brutality, scope and magnitude with the Shoah, the Holocaust, of the Jewish People. And this message is directed to you Mr. Deputy Minister, Panagiotis Sgouridis, in response to your address today.
In our time, the serpent of fundamentalism and extremism is rearing its ugly head again.  We must remember that evil is not the exclusive property of any specific religion, country or ethnic group. By its nature, evil seeks to differentiate and discriminate between one life and another, between one human being and another.  However, the only real difference is between good and evil- between humanity and darkness.  It is our responsibility to always choose right over wrong- to choose good over evil.
The touching and impressive monument is the kind donation of Mr. Victor Venouziou, who worked tirelessly over many years to have this ceremony take place.  The Star of David which adorns has always the symbol of the Jewish people. It was the same symbol used to target Jews during the Holocaust and send them to their deaths based solely on their faith and heritage.  It is also the symbol which represents the perseverance and survival of the Jewish people throughout history. The Star of David is proudly displayed on the flag of the State of Israel, which represents the rebirth of the Jewish nation in its historic homeland.
The ceremony today sends out a powerful message against anti-Semitism at a time when it is unfortunately experiencing a resurgence in Europe.  European Jews find themselves facing deadly anti-Semitism stemming from radical Islam and extremist forces on the Right and Left.  70 years after World War II, violent attacks against them have once again become commonplace in the heart of major European cities in France, Germany, Belgium and other countries  Just to mention a few major recent incidents among many, they include the murder of four Jews in the Kosher Supermarket in Paris in January this year, the killing of a member of the Danish Jewish Community at the Great Synagogue in Copenhagen in February, the murder of two Israeli tourists at the Brussels Jewish Museum in August 2014 and the brutal killing of four children and a Rabbi in a Jewish School in Toulouse, France in 2012.   Leading European officials like the EU Commission Vice President, Frans Timmermans, and French Premier, Emmanuel Valls, have sounded an alarm about the growing anti-Semitism stressing that it threatens the very social fabric of Europe.
In Greece, anti-Semitism has been expressed through the desecration and arson of Jewish sites including Synagogues and cemeteries, hate speech in extremist media and websites and the rise of neo-Nazi forces like the Golden Dawn.  The anti-Racism Law adopted in September 2014, defining anti-Semitic expressions as crimes was a positive step.  Leading members of the Golden Dawn have been released from prison pending trial on charges of constituting a criminal organization.  We can only hope that justice will be finally rendered when their trial, which has been repeatedly postponed, resumes.
However, legal means are not enough to combat anti-Semitism.  The dark ideology behind it must also be dismantled.  This can only be achieved through remembrance and education. We are now entering a new era in which there will no longer be any living survivors to recount their experiences - an age  in which the Shoah will only be taught through recorded testimonies and documentation.  Holocaust denial is also becoming more prevalent in our time with an increasing number of voices questioning its existence.  This is why the memorial unveiled here today not only serves a commemorative function, but can play an educational role in teaching the younger generation about the tragedy of the city’s Jewish community as well as  the need for constant vigilance in combating extremism and anti-Semitism.
I thank the Mayor, the Municipal Council and the citizens of Kavala for hosting us here today.  I hope that this monument will be visited often by the city's citizens, especially its youngsters, and that the story of the Jews of Greece and those of Kavala will become known to all.
I conclude by paying my deepest respects to the venerable lost Jewish souls with the Jewish prayer for the victims of the Holocaust:
"Judge of the Earth please remember the rivers of blood shed like water - the blood of fathers and sons- the blood of mothers and their babies”.  .
    Thank you

Greece and Israel: Two States at the Tipping Point By Dr. Robert Zaller

Zaller Robert
Greece and Israel are two small modern states with ancient pasts, one at the geographical edge of Europe and the other of the West itself. Each has played a role in the shaping of Western civilization far out of proportion to its physical size. Each, in a different way, now faces a crisis that goes to the core of what that civilization means, today and tomorrow.
Greece joined the European Union under false pretenses in 2001. Its economy, classically underdeveloped, had many of the characteristics of such economies: overurbanization, clientelism, and elite corruption. It subsequently followed a classic trajectory of predatory loans and collusive borrowing by state actors over the next seven years, sealed by bribes and covert understandings. It will take a long time to fully disentangle the story, but the outlines are clear: Greek politicians mortgaged their country’s economic and cultural assets, and its political sovereignty as well, to international banks and to the hegemonic ambitions of the European Union’s dominant power, Germany. By 2008, Greek indebtedness, although a minor item on the balance sheet of the European Union, was enough that any large-scale crisis could render the country technically insolvent. Such a crisis occurred that year in the worldwide financial collapse known as the Great Recession.
Greece was swept up in this crisis in much the same way as other debtor nations, particularly on the periphery of Europe: Iceland, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, and Italy. All were subjected to ruthless regimes of austerity that led to severe economic contractions that, in the case of Greece and Spain, resulted in sustained unemployment above 25%—rates that exceeded the worst figures of the Great Depression of the 1930s. The purpose of this was to extract wealth to repay sovereign and banking creditors: in short, the very agents responsible for the financial crash would have their losses borne by their chief victims.
A not dissimilar scenario played out in the United States, where banks and corporations deemed too big to fail were bailed out at public expense. There was, however, a significant difference: the U.S. at no time contemplated the default of individual states, many of which were themselves at the point of bankruptcy. Instead, they were given direct cash infusions by Washington. Federal policy did many things in the wake of the crisis that exacerbated it, and great hardship was avoidably visited on the many millions who lost their homes and employment. But it did not attempt to single out particular states for fiscal punishment, or use the crisis as an opportunity to mulct them of their assets and strip them of their sovereign authority. This did occur in Europe, and especially in the case of Greece.
Greece was not only subjected to what has justly been called fiscal waterboarding to a greater extent than anywhere else in Europe, but it has also been excoriated and vilified as has no other EU member. It may or may not be a coincidence, but neither Ireland nor any of the other Mediterranean countries exposed to austerity resisted German aggression during World War II (Italy was, of course, an ally). Only Greece did. The Greeks have long memories of this experience, which resulted in an occupation that cost them 200,000 dead. It may be that the Germans do as well. In any case, the humiliation of Greece has been exemplary and thorough.
And the Greeks have at last rebelled. While all the other austeritized states of Europe have submitted to their punishment—that is to say, immiseration and forced wealth transfers—under quisling “conservative” regimes, Greece voted in a leftist coalition, Syriza, which has asserted the odd-sounding doctrine that actually starving citizens come before debt-hungry banks. The Germans and their fellow players in the European Central Bank responded with fury when the new government announced a 200 million euro relief fund for its neediest citizens without asking creditor permission. This has led to renewed threats to push Greece into open default and force its exit from the eurozone.
I think the Greeks should get up and leave on their own. I think they should have done so six years ago, when the EU imposed terms on them that were certain to plunge Greece into lasting depression and debt peonage, and put its economy into foreign receivership. It will be harder to do so today, but there is no other path forward unless the EU unclenches its jaws and permits Greece to recover on its own terms. The events of the past two months, and the ones that loom ahead, make it highly unlikely that it will do so.
Once Greece returns to its own currency, the drachma, it can either recalculate its obligations in terms of the drachma’s exchange value or opt for default. To survive, it will have to cultivate its assets, notably shipping and tourism, and put an end to its clientelism. It will also have to find fresh sources of capital, since it will certainly be frozen out of European currency markets, and almost as certainly the International Monetary Fund. It will have to find new diplomatic partners at the same time. Russia comes immediately to mind, and, not coincidentally, Greece’s new prime minister, Alexis Tsipras, will soon be visiting Moscow. China has already heavily invested in the reconstruction of Greece’s chief port, Piraeus.
Some observers think a Greek exit from the eurozone could lead to the unraveling of the European Union itself. There couldn’t be a happier result. Under German domination, the EU has become a Fourth Reich. In economic terms, it has been little better for much of Europe than the Third one was.
Israel has a different problem. Since it proclaimed statehood in 1948, its chief sponsor and protector has been the United States. Even before that, the Jewish community in Palestine was regarded in the Arab world as a spearhead of Western imperial interests. There has been more than a little truth to this perception. Israel joined Britain and France in their ill-conceived venture to seize the Suez Canal from Egypt in 1956. It was rescued from defeat and destruction by American intervention when the Arab League attacked it in 1973. It receives more military aid from the U.S. than any other country, and its security service, Mossad, is highly integrated with its American counterparts. The Iron Dome missile defense system that protected its cities from bombardment by Hamas last summer relied heavily on American subvention.
Since America’s chief geopolitical interest in the Middle East has been access to its oil, however, its support for Israel—whose presence as a felt intrusion on Muslim soil has never been accepted in the region—has always been a source of tension. This has been particularly true since 1967, when Israel occupied the West Bank of the Jordan River following the Six Day War. For nearly fifty years, the creation of an independent Palestinian state on this territory has been the principal diplomatic issue in the Middle East.
In the past several years, however, there has been a tectonic shift in the Middle East. The destabilizing effects of America’s invasion of Iraq produced the Arab Spring revolutions of 2011, the disastrous civil war in Syria, and the creation of a de facto Islamic state, ISIS, across broad swaths of northern Iraq and western Syria. The principal beneficiary of this unrest has been Iran, America’s chief rival in the Middle East, whose influence has grown exponentially in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and Yemen. An all-but declared war exists between Shi’ite Iran and the chief Sunni powers, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, and is being waged by proxy in Syria and Yemen. The U.S., seeking to keep its fast-weakening foothold in the region, has made an alliance of convenience with Iran against ISIS, and engaged it in multipower negotiations aimed at lifting economic sanctions in place against Iran for nearly two generations in return for a promise not to build nuclear weapons for ten years.
Since Iran has repeatedly proclaimed the annihilation of Israel as a solemn obligation since 1979, the prospect of cooperation if not accord between Teheran and Washington is a nightmare scenario for the Israelis, whose Prime Minister , Benjamin Netanyahu, made an impassioned plea before a joint session of Congress last month against the proposed nuclear treaty. An infuriated President Obama, seizing upon Netanyahu’s (since-retracted) comment that Israeli-Palestinian negotiations were a dead letter, all but threatened to leave Israel to its fate.
This is a hasty summary of a complex set of issues, but it raises for Israel, as in a different way for Greece, a pertinent question: why should it not take control of its fate?
Separating (not necessarily parting) from the United States would have important advantages—and challenges—for Israel. Israel’s destiny, if it is to have one, will be as a Middle Eastern country, not as an appendage of the West. It has, at the moment, decided assets to offer the Sunni powers in the region, most obviously its own nuclear capacity, but also its cyberwar skills and its intelligence network. A de facto alliance with Saudi Arabia and Egypt (with which it already cooperates) could have ancillary benefits on the Palestinian question, too. All of this is risky and, for the moment, conjectural; but Israel’s future in its neighborhood is as a savvy player protecting its own interests, not as an American proxy. It may not be the Israel we have been used to. But it might be an Israel with a better chance to survive.

Israel, Greece and US to Conclude Maritime Drill

By Barbara Opall-Rome

TEL AVIV — Israeli, Greek and US naval forces are wrapping up a two-week annual exercise aimed at honing maritime proficiencies and interoperability for potential joint missions in the Mediterranean.
Now in its fifth year, the trilateral drill — dubbed Noble Dina — began April 29 in Souda Bay, Crete, and ends here Thursday after more than a week of anti-submarine warfare (ASW) training and joint maneuvers in international waters.
This year's drill was the largest one yet, involving hundreds of military personnel and nearly a dozen surface, subsurface and air elements, including Greek and Israeli submarines, a Greek frigate and the US destroyer Laboon.
"Last year, we met in the high seas for the first time. And this year, we did it again, but under more complex scenarios and without advance planning," said Lt. Col. Ziv Barak, designer and commander of the exercise on behalf of the Israel Navy.
In a Tuesday interview, Barak said all assets, including manned and unmanned aircraft, were involved in the protracted ASW part of the drill.
"We managed to join three fleets together at sea in scenarios much more involved than in previous years."
Other mission scenarios included search and rescue, ship seizure and port security operations, Barak said.
"We're discovering that we're dealing with similar threats and learning how to work comfortably together, which is very important to countries that share this area of operations."
The Israeli Navy began joint training with the Hellenic Navy following the discontinuation in 2010 of Reliant Mermaid, an annual trilateral drill that Israel had conducted for a decade with the US and Turkey.
Ankara suspended training with Israel following Israel's seizure of the Mavi Marmara, part of a Turkish flotilla aimed at breaching Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip.

Visiting Greek specialist: Core of Jerusalem-Athens ties remain strong

The strong relationship between Israel and Greece will remain, even as the rhetorical and symbolic atmosphere surrounding the ties may be less positive under new far-left Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, a Greek specialist on Hellenic-Israel ties said on Wednesday.

Aristotle Tziampiris, who was in Israel to attend a symposium on the Greek-Israeli relationship at Bar-Ilan University’s BESA Center, defined the “core” of the relationship as tourism, military/security cooperation, business deals and energy.

“The core relationship will continue, amid an agreement to disagree on the Palestinian issue,” he said.

He pointed out that Tsipras’s Syriza party had formed a coalition with the right-wing Independent Greeks, whose leader, Panos Kammenos, is defense minister and has made clear he wants the strong Israeli-Greek relationship to continue.

Tsipras’s election caused some initial concern in Jerusalem regarding his far-left roots and the problematic statements he and other party members have made against Israel in the past.

But Tsipras is pragmatic, Tziampiris said, adding that with all Greece’s economic troubles and its tensions with the EU, Greece “wants more friendships, and wants to deepen the ones that exist,” not weaken them.

The Israeli-Greek relationship is based on clearly defined common interests that have not changed with the change of government, he asserted.

Tziampiris, who teaches international relations at the University of Piraeus and has just published a book entitled The Emergence of Israeli-Greek Cooperation, said that when looking at the relationship, one must ask three questions: why ties began to flourish in 2009 after 60 years of a relationship that varied from bad to not very good; in what areas the ties flourished; and what happens next.

To understand why the relationship took off, he said, it is necessary to look “at the big picture.”

In 2009, when the tone and tenor of the ties began to change, Greece was going through the financial crisis from which it has yet to recover fully. And while this was taking place and Greece’s star seemed to be falling, the fortunes of its main rival – Turkey – were on the rise.

As a result, he said, Greece was in need of finding new friends, and an opening with Israel became a serious option as Israel’s ties with Turkey deteriorated, culminating in a break in ties over the Mavi Marmara incident in 2010.

It was no coincidence, he said, that Greece’s then-prime minister, George Papandreou, made his first visit to Israel in July 2010 – barely a month after the Mavi Marmara fiasco – and Netanyahu reciprocated with a visit to Athens the next month.

While Netanyahu and Papandreou developed good chemistry during a chance meeting at Moscow’s Cafe Pushkin in early 2010, it was the geopolitical conditions – Greece’s financial strain and the Israeli-Turkish tension – that led to a major breakthrough.

The relationship, Tziampiris said, immediately helped both countries and was evident in five ways: • Greece sent immediate and significant assistance to Israel in December 2010 to fight the Carmel Forest fire.

• Greece prevented the launch of a second Gaza flotilla from its ports in 2011.

• The number of Israeli tourists to Greece has risen from some 20,000-30,000 a year to 400,000-500,000 – not an insignificant number in a country facing deep financial problems.

• The quality and quantity of Israeli-Greek military cooperation has increased enormously, with Israel training in Greek air space, and IAF planes flying over Greece instead of over Turkey (where they are now barred). Last summer, Israel sent a military attaché to its embassy in Athens, an indication of an upgrade in security ties.

• There are discussions under way with Greece and Cyprus about cooperating on an “energy triangle” in the eastern Mediterranean. Though no decisions have been made on a deal that would include natural gas extraction and liquefaction, only a vastly improved political relationship could enable such a discussion in the first place.

Tziampiris said that the improved relationship with Israel did not come at the expense of a strong Greek relationship with the Palestinians or with the Arab world. In fact, Greece voted for the inclusion of the Palestinian Authority in UNESCO in 2011, and a year later voted to give the Palestinians non-member observer- state status in the UN General Assembly.

Although Israel was not “thrilled with these moves,” Tziampiris said this would help ensure the continuity of the relationship under the new government, since it showed that it was possible for Athens to support the Palestinians politically but still have strong, mutually beneficial ties with Israel.
